My sixteen year old son likes a few of things - golf {among many sports}, Star Wars, and Legos. For a teenage boy to be excited about his room decor is no small feat! I think I accomplished it! You might remember how I have been slowly getting his room made over - first, the wallpapered wall to look like planked wood, then the desktop made from laminate flooring. Last was this project - industrial shelving!
It was easy to do, really. Although, I must admit that my husband did the majority of the work and I am the one who did the creative thinking! Ha - which is how most of the larger projects go around here!
To make these shelves, I took basic 2x12x8 pieces of wood and stained them with Rustoleum's weathered gray, then used the 3x polyeurathane in the satin finish.
We used 6 black flanges, 12 inch long pipes, and caps plus straps underneath each one to secure the shelves in place. He was able to get about two screws in each flange in a stud so the shelves are SUPER strong and can hold a person on each one!
Styling his bookshelves was fun and I used all of his favorite things on there.
We added some simple artwork that I bought through Art.com over his bed.
Being from "earthquake country" here in Southern California, you never put something big or heavy over your bed headboard area.
So, these prints are perfect -- I just glued them with spray glue to form board that I trimmed to size. I put them over his bed with command velcro strips.
And here, you can see the whole room put together.
It looked pretty good with the new desktop but with the added industrial shelving, it's really a great place for him to do his school work - or his Legos!

It looks so nice.. I loove the wall paper. Great job putting it all together
ReplyDeleteI love this bedroom and especially the shelves. I'm glad he likes it, too!!!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! I have a son who is 17 and he also appreciates when we do cool things for him and for all of his stuff. I bet you are like me and can't believe how fast our kids grow up. Your son's new room is terrific. I love the golf blue prints. My son plays Varsity golf and hockey and that is a perfect idea!
ReplyDeleteHi Becky would you mind telling us where you purchased the shelving hardware? Was it expensive?
ReplyDeleteYou can purchase industrial piping from any Lowes or Home Depot. The foot flanges are about $6 each, the 12 in pipes are about $8 each, and the end caps are about $2 each. I just built a whole bathroom vanity out of piping so I've got all the pricing down!
DeleteI love the overall theme of the room. Everything from the shelves to the golf print pictures! It all really brings the room together nicely.
ReplyDeleteI've been planning to make these shelves for my office but have been advised that at 12-inches deep they would not be strong enough for the heavy books I want to put on them. Am I correct in understanding that yours are 12-inches deep and about 6 or 8 feet long?
