Earlier this week, I shared with you how I deal with my husband's clutter. I got a LOT of great feedback and many of you are struggling with this. I hope it encouraged you! Today, I'm going to share my husband's closet - which I showed you a couple of years ago - but I've got better lighting, slightly better camera skills, and other ideas for helping him to keep organized in his closet that I didn't do a few years ago.
Just for your reference, we have a four bedroom home. We have two bedrooms in the front of the house and two bedrooms in the back. The fourth bedroom is my office. You can see here above, or from the family room post, that there is a small hallway that leads to the "Master bathroom" across from my office and then our bedroom at the very back of the house.
The office is tiny - like I don't know how you'd make an actual bedroom out of this room, but it has a closet in it and it's across from our bathroom. It's perfect for us since my husband can get ready in the early morning and just walk from his closet/my office to the bathroom and back to get ready without disturbing me.
It's also perfect for an office because it's small and I don't need a ton of room. But, I have to share it with him and his collection of books and other stuff. So, a few years ago I got him a very nice closet system - I have these in all our closets. They are Elfa Closet Systems and they go on sale once a year the day after Christmas. Well worth the investment for getting more storage out of the closet, too.
Well, recently {as I posted on Instagram}, I decided the chair in here was just not being used and it would be better in my daughter's room. But, it left a big space and my hubby really wanted something to sit down and put his shoes on in the morning. So, I found this amazing, storage bench at Zulily as a compromise -- let's just say that I think he likes it even BETTER than the chair because I store all his stuff inside.
It fits his tennis shoes and his bags - many that he uses for various things. And he can throw things in and out of there way more easily. It came with a whole bunch of shoe pockets, but we were able to take out the extras as they are velcro'd in there.
One thing my hubby DOES like that I do when organizing his closet is folding his t-shirts in quarters and putting in his drawers. He can see each one and then grab what he wants without making a mess. We've been doing this for many years now.
I also color code his shirt in the closet for him to make it easier to find or decide on them. And, yes, I leave the dry cleaning shirts on their hanger {I take it out of the plastic} - even though I was taking them off and putting on the black hangers, but I realized how much extra work it was and it didn't make a difference to him. The three bins on the bottom are for his laundry - he sorts by everyday clothes, work clothes, and dry cleaning. He loves having that set up. There is even room left over in there now since adding the storage bench. Also, I've had some think how horrible it is that the shoes are stored there and germs, etc. Listen, I'm not a germophobe...we are some of the healthiest people I know and so apparently it doesn't seem to make a difference. The shoes sit over the top of his sock drawer. So, it's fine :)
Also, as tempting as it was to want to label every shelf on the front as to what each was dedicated for, I resisted. Instead, I put a Post-it on the wall just to give the general idea of what I was going for in his closet. This way he can take them down if he wants to, or leave up for reference. Plus, it was quick!
My daughter is liking the new storage bench in the office now, too. She can relax and hang out with mom still! Everyone is happy! So, there you have it -- an organized hubby closet. A hubby who is happy. A wife who is happy. Compromise, it's what life is all about! Have you ever "helped" your hubby with his organizing? Was it good or bad?
