Bedroom closet clean up (part 1)

Here are some ways to get started on cleaning out your closet.  We'll start with a basic bedroom closet.

Does your closet look like this?

Cleaning Closet Clutter

Here's what you need to start with in clearing it out.
1.  What is this closet dedicated to do?  Is it a bedroom closet, pantry, utility closet, or coat closet?  If you're closet is in your bedroom and you're finding that you have cleaning supplies, towels, or other things that don't serve the purpose of this closet, get those things out!

2.  Now do you have too much in a closet?  (Probably, but still thought I'd ask).  If you do, it's obvious that you need to let some stuff go!  My rule of thumb is if I don't LOVE it, haven't worn it in a year, or just didn't even remember I had it in my closet - it's OUT! If you are hanging on to clothes from ten years ago, seriously?  Get rid of it.  Is the item torn, ripped, stained, or smelly?  Get rid of it! Does it fit you?  Unless you fit into the clothes right now, get rid of it! You don't need to hang on to clothes that don't fit. There are RARE exceptions, but if you haven't worn it in more than a year, you aren't going to wear it again....get it out!

3. Now, pack up that stuff and schedule an appointment with a charity.  Unless it's something really nice, give it to charity.  If it's good stuff, go ahead and put it on your free recycle group or give to a close friend!

See that messy closet above?  That messy closet is THIS closet below.  That was the picture my husband took while we were touring the house (getting ready to buy it).  I have since put in a closet system, but I still had to go through it and clean it out before I could put the closet system in.

So, tell me what closet are you going to work on this week?  I'd love to hear what your plans are!

Not sure how I stumbled upon your site but I love it. What's funny is that I just finished organizing my coat closet that I recently blogged about and am almost finished with my bedroom closet. Sure wish I found your site sooner, great tips! Either way, I'd love to get your take on my coat closet. Stop by if you have some time.
