Is it me or are dishes one of those things that you just either love to do or hate? Sometimes it's pretty much hate! But, my kids have to do their share of dishes! How do I get them to do it? Well, I've got three tips that help kids get the dishes done - hopefully, without complaint!
1. Teach them young - I have always pushed hard here that teaching kids young makes a HUGE difference. When you teach your kids that as soon as they finish eating, they need to wash their dishes, it gets to be a habit. When it's a habit, it's just what you do! We've tried to instill the "wash the dishes and put them in the dishwasher when you're done eating" since they were little - can't remember the exact age but when they were able to reach the sink is when I remember teaching them that habit!
2. Take Turns - Yes, there are other dish washing duties after a big dinner or meal. The kids have to take turns doing the dishes - meaning not only put them in the dishwasher but wash the other ones by hand. They have a chalkboard on the back of our pantry that they use to keep track of whose turn it is to do the dishes!
3. A great pair of rubber gloves! It might seem funny, but giving them some latex gloves, especially for doing those hand washed dishes in super hot water, helps! And, I LOVE these cute rubber gloves from Full Circle! Here's why:
• Sustainable alternative {you know, for those of us who want non-toxic, earth friendly products}
• Stylish 100% cotton cuff for catching running water {this is SUPER important}
• Super soft lined interior for comfort and hot water protection {like putting pajamas on your hands}
• Slip resistant grip {to keep those dishes in line}
• Loops for hanging and drying {use that command hook}
• $8.99 retail
To be honest, these arrived at the perfect time! I have had to hand wash a LOT of dishes during our kitchen renovation, as well as my kids, so we've used these gloves SO much and really love them. They are super soft inside and keep my arms and hands completely dry!
OK, so tell me, what is your best tip for getting your kids to do the dishes? Do you think you can try any of these?
