Getting Organized for Fire Prevention & Giveaway

This is a sponsored post on behalf of First Alert. All opinions are my own.

October is "Fire Prevention" month and I have been preparing for disasters now even more because of how many I have been watching all around our country. I have personally had family effected by the natural disasters and it has made me more aware of how lacking our household is in terms of preparation.

As far as fire prevention, this is something that EVERY household needs to prepare for because we are all at risk. We have so many ways to prepare, as much as we are able, and I truly believe that having fire and smoke alarms can save lives! Is this something you've had on your to-do list, but just haven't jumped at the chance to get it done? Don't wait!

Super Safety Check List:

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly
  • Replace batteries every six months {I recommend setting up an alarm or reminder on your Cozi calendar}
  • Alarms don't last forever, replace every 10 years
  • Install alarms on every level and in every bedroom
  • Plan and practice an escape route
  • Have a meeting spot
  • In an emergency, get out of your home and stay out
  • Professionally service your furnace, dryer vent, and chimney every year.
  • Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen. Be alert while cooking.

Have an escape plan:

  • Draw a floor plan of your home, marking all doors, windows and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms {graph paper works great}
  • Show two ways out of each room in case your main exit is blocked by smoke and flames.
  • Agree on an outside meeting place
  • Practice your escape route with your whole family at least twice a year.
  • If your smoke or carbon monoxide alarms sound, get out and stay out!

Since you need to replace your fire/smoke alarm every TEN YEARS, my tip is that when you purchase your smoke alarm, you mark the date on the back of the unit with the month and year. This way, you'll know how long ago it was that your purchased your smoke alarm. Test it yearly on a significant date - anniversary, birthday, holiday, etc. Replace the batteries on that date. Use Cozi calendar to set up an automatic reminder that is sent to you so you don't forget.
