How to Hide Messy Cords with Pegboard

I have this problem area under my desk in my home office with all my cords - they are awful and ugly. It's probably something many of you have a problem with, too! I've been trying to come up with some sort of "pretty" solution to the problem. And I did! Get ready to pin this and share it because there is NOTHING on Pinterest like it - I've looked!

These are all the plugs and cords that I have to have under my desk but they aren't exactly hidden and they aren't exactly pretty! Cue the pegboard!

Yes, here is the AFTER. Let me show you the hidden part. It's pretty neat! You can pull down the pegboard and the power strip is right there to get to. I even labeled all the cords and plugs, of course.

Let me show you how I did this because it's quite simple. 

First, I bought some pegboard and cut it down to size. This is a HUGE piece and cost about $12!! I can cut it up and use it for several projects. It's light weight and fits {barely} in the back of my van. You can even have them cut it down to size at the home improvement center. I measured the opening of the area under my desk and cut it down by 1/4 inch on all sides so that I could pull it in and out.

I used three different shades of spray paint that are a slight shade up from each other. To make the ombré effect, simply spray the whole piece of pegboard the lightest shade first. Then, visually cut in thirds using the spray paint. Carefully spray each third layering slightly with the spray paint. There is lots of room for error so it's not too hard.

Here are the supplies you'll need in addition to the pegboard:

• Power Strip {of course}
• Command velcro strips
• Command Light clips
• Cable Ties
• Felt {if you want to protect floors}

I turned the pegboard around and used the cable ties to hold the power strip in place. Since they are clear cable ties, they don't show much on the spray painted side. I also had to thread two cable ties* together to make it long enough and then clipped the excess.

After putting on the power strip, I added some felt on the bottom to protect the hardwood floors. 

Labeled each cord so I could easily see what each cord was for and what machine or appliance it went to. 

This is the part that took me the longest to figure out. I needed some way to "open" and "close" the pegboard to access the power strip, but I didn't want to screw anything into my new desk in my office. I decided the light clips were the perfect solution, but bought the velcro strips to help tweak it. The clips "hold back" the panel from falling forward, but they can easily be removed and put back with the velcro. Being they are clear, you can't really even see them. I like that!

National Hardware sent me a big assortment of pegboard attachments. I chose a few of them to hang my headphones, USB cable, and some office supplies under my desk where I could grab them easily. If you see the extra extension cord popping out up top, that's for my vintage fan on my desk - since it has no switch I have to plug in each time I use it. You can also see the cable ties through the pegboard, but they aren't super obvious. 

Now my desk area looks amazing! No more pesky cords! I can hold extra office supplies with the pegboard attachments and it looks neat and tidy!
