While I'm thrilled we bought a "new to us" RV motorhome a couple of months ago, it's easy to get tired of looking at this ginormous beast that's sitting in our backyard and realize that it's just ugly! I'm planning lots of DIY on the INSIDE of the motorhome, but first I wanted to do a bit of camouflaging of the beast on the outside. What do I mean?
Well, here it is on it's new concrete pad. It looks fine. It's "tucked" {as much as you can tuck a 35 foot motorhome} into the back of the yard. But, you can see it from any vantage point in the house. I'm a realistic optimist. So, from the moment we decided to get this thing, I had a plan!
I nicely asked my hubby if we could curve the concrete pad the motorhome was going to be sitting on and add an extra few feet to the side of it. I wanted to make a patio outside of it because it would not only look MUCH better, but it would be a great function when we used the motorhome as a guest house. Even, though I probably add another 10% to the cost of the concrete, it was worth it. I think he agrees now that it was a great idea {patting myself on the back...ha, ha!}
I was able to find a rusted, old table at an antique store for $30. It was barely noticeable in the basement corner of the store. My hubby noticed it. We snatched it up and took it home. But, I had no chairs to go with it. I found THESE chairs at Target in black. They were under $30 each. So I spray painted those too. I sprayed everything in Gloss Apple Red from Rustoleum - my favorite red for all my outdoor stuff.
Next, I took the old, plastic storage bench that was under the kids' play area and spray painted it with spray paint made for plastic - it's a tad bit splotchy in the is picture, but it looks SO much better in person! I plan to make {or have my mom, the seamstress} a cushion for the top of it so it adds a little more color over there. The storage bench holds our propane tanks and the pillows/cushions when the weather is a problem.
Then, for the back of the RV, where you can see it from the street - as we have a wrought iron see-through gate - I have a whole bunch of planters on wheels! The palms are supposed to grow to about 8-10 feet high, eventually so they will cover up more of the back of the RV. I've had the bouganvillea tree and the sago palm for probably ten years and they are still going strong.
The hard part was finding enough rolling trays for these potted plants to go on the bottoms that matched or actually looked good! It was not possible -- so I just spray painted those. They came in the standard terra cotta color so I took the plastic primer paint, then spray painted them a similar color. The brown pots that the palms are in are from Costco and are only $19.99 each for those huge ones! I spray painted a couple of the other older pots in the vivid blue to pop and go along with our house color.
It's so great because when we're getting ready to go on a trip, it's super easy to move everything out of the way because it's all on wheels, including the storage bench that is sitting on a furniture dolly!
It's also such a lovely place to sit and relax in the back of the yard - it's mostly shady so it will be nice out there when it warms up, too! It feels like being on vacation at home! There are still more exciting things I have left to do and plans spinning in my head, so I'll keep sharing these as I go! What do you think?

Super cute! Our RV is hidden on our side yard so I don't have to look at it, but I would definitely have the cute little bistro set next to if I had to look at it every day!
ReplyDeleteDo you have zoning laws in your area? Our neighbors have an RV they use once a year and store off-site for the winter, but keep it in the yard between our houses the rest of the year. Every spring/summer our town gives them a ticket and fine them. I think the fine is less than what it would cost to store it 6 months.
