Decluttering Your Home

Every year I attend a few blog conferences, where I meet so many of the bloggers and people that I've admired and seen their work. A few years ago, I had been in contact, via Twitter and other professional organizer, with Geralin Thomas. You may or may not recognize her name, but Geralin is one of the professional organizers on the A&E show "Hoarders" and has an amazing ability to help people who are in absolute desperation to get their things organized and decluttered - but more than the average clutter bug! Well, I met her, and she and I hit it off! I adore her - she is so sweet and kind - and patient! She has written the most amazing book and I can't wait to share it with you...

I almost NEVER do book reviews - let me be honest, with my crazy, distracted personality, I just really don't enjoy reading books. But, this one - this one is totally different. If I had to write a book, this would be how I'd want it to be. I have no interest in writing a book, but this would be the way I'd want it.

If you need some motivation, some simple guidelines, pictures {I like lots of pictures}, and examples of how to get things decluttered and organized - you are going to LOVE this book, Decluttering Your Home: Tips, Techniques & Trade Secrets. She starts off just explaining how her book works and it totally makes sense!

Then, she moves right into the clutter! I loved her points of the "psychology of clutter" defining it by:

  • Unused
  • Unwanted
  • Unloved
  • Undecided
  • Unfinished
Where clutter comes from - how it makes you FEEL! It's going to light your inner declutterer on FIRE and help motivate you to get up and start getting that clutter out! And, oh, when you do, it will be so freeing!

Why are you keeping clutter? She's going to show you a full chart of what to do with your stuff. There are several effects of clutter - physical, emotional, and financial! What are the benefits of decluttering? I'm sure we all KNOW that, but it's so true how freeing it feels! She's going to walk you through your personality to help you define what kind of clutterer you are. Then, she moves into fixing it! And then, lots of ideas how to organize - lots of photos! I just love it!!

  1. My hardest problem is my husband! I would be a minimalist if he wasn't a hoarder... every piece of paper, every piece of PACKAGING from something we buy, old furniture can't be replaced even if its stained or ripped because it "still works" he won't toss clothes from back in college. I purge toys and me and the kids clothes and anything else thats "mine" but he has the biggest bedroom in the house as his office and its got boxes of stuff piled along the walls and our couches are shredded and stained but he wont replace them and ugh.

How do you deal with spouses who just will not hop on the bandwagon? I literally can't even go in his office anymore it gives me a nervous breakdown and I don't want to have guests anymore :(
