We had a bunch of company stay with us a few weeks ago. Annually we house pastors from around the country at our home to stay while they attend a local conference. This year we had 9 pastors stay with us. We even borrowed another RV/motorhome from my sister in law and housed some more of them so they'd be comfortable. We kept them all over the house and outside in the motorhomes. We want them to be comfortable. We had another visitor stay overnight with us right after they left, too. It was a blessing to have the motorhome as a guest house for each visitor. My goal has been to make it feel less like an RV and more like a small cottage. So, I showed you the little kitchen update I did last week and today I'm showing you another new small space update - the bathroom!
Here is the bathroom when we bought our RV. It's a bit brassy for my taste and pretty boring. It's great, but not cozy like I'd like to have! And here it is now...
I mean - really? Yes, really! It's so pretty, isn't it? Much less brassy - even though I really can't paint that folding shower door. Trust me, I've tried to negotiate about that with the Hubsters, even asked if we could just yank it out and put a soft curtain in there. But, compromise is the name of the game! The brass is WAY less noticeable!

Yes, I tiled EVERY. SINGLE. WALL. But, this isn't regular tile. It's self adhesive tile - like I did in the RV kitchen. I also spray painted all the light switches, the cabinet handles, toilet paper holder, the light bar over the sink, and the towel rack - all of which were brass! They are painted with the Rustoleum Hammered paint and primer in Dark Bronze. It's really beautiful and helped to take the brass down a notch!
I love how everything just glows in there now! It's really beautiful. This particular tile called "Maya" and is still on sale for only $2.99 each sheet {about 9 x 9}. I bought WAY too much. I was worried that I wouldn't have enough. The total cost in the bathroom was probably around $120 to tile all the walls. Not a bad price to pay - especially seeing the transformation. Plus, it's light - it's not heavy like real tile - and was fairly easy to put on the walls.
I bought so much that I put it on the wall outside the bathroom {it's sort of a dressing area now}.
So, a little secret, because I'm SO not a perfectionist and hanging something {sort of like stenciling} can make a person go nuts trying to get everything exactly straight! The first thing, an RV may be somewhat level but I went off the cabinets so that they were level with them. Not level with the ground! Otherwise it would have looked funny.
Also, getting these tiles cut exactly into the corner was not an easy task. So, I figured out how to fudge it a bit. I used white Gorilla tape - sort of like duct tape or electrical tape would work fine too - and tape all the edges and corners. I used white so it would look like the "grout" on the tiles. It worked well and helped to make the corners look much nicer. And you can see under the cabinet and some of the tiny spaces I used it there so I didn't have to cut tiles down. It just made it easier -and I'm all about making it easier!
There is so much left I want to do. I'm trying to come up with creative and inexpensive ways to make this motorhome feel cozy and feel welcome - not to mention how it feels when we travel in it!
Here's one last before and after. So, what do you think? What do you think of this small space transformation?

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! What simple "tile" can do! Have you thought of perhaps painting the mirror frame (pewter or black) and/or changing the light fixture? That could add even more pizzaz to your makeover :)
ReplyDeleteI have thought about it. But, for now, I'm keeping as is. As for the fixture, they are actually difficult to find. These are special fixtures made for RVs with special bulbs and wattage, etc. So, I just spray painted the existing one. Maybe someday I'll get a new one ;)

ReplyDeleteNow I actually like the tile in the bathroom, MUCH better than the bedroom. I think it's a great improvement. It's amazing how it changes the color or the look of things you did nothing with like the color of the sink and shower. By the way, do you actually travel with that plant in there? Aren't you afraid one of these days when someone has to make a fairly sharp fast turn its going to go flying across the bathroom and get dirt everywhere?
