Why I'm Dreaming of a Black Kitchen

Disclosure: MasterBrand cabinets provided me the cabinets I used in this kitchen remodel. I bought the rest of the materials with my own money. The opinions I shared about using these materials are my own, and MasterBrand did not tell me what to say or how to say it.

Did you just say a BLACK kitchen? Yep, you read that right. Our home was built in 1947 and someone "updated" the kitchen around 1971 with some special homemade cabinets. Those cabinets have just about finished their life now...they are falling apart, the avocado green tile kitchen counters are cracked and broken. The kitchen has served us well the last ten years we've lived in this house. I've even painted all the cabinets in an attempt to give the kitchen a cuteness factor. It IS cute, but these cabinets are crazy weird sizes.

My husband and I decided it was time to update the kitchen and get it remodeled. I've saved up some money and I am so crazy-excited to announce that MasterBrand Cabinets is going to be joining me with our kitchen cabinets. If you don't know, I LOVE their cabinets. I talked about their cabinets a few months ago and was so impressed with the quality and the amount of organization they give you, so I'm absolutely thrilled that we will be working on this project together.

Let me give you a little "why" we need to remodel our kitchen. Please, don't take this as complaining or whining because I have honestly been perfectly content with our kitchen despite it's lack of "newness". However, we entertain a LOT - if you've followed me for anytime, you know that our outdoor kitchen gets used year round and we have people over several times a month - when I say "people" I mean we have groups of dozens of people at a time! I made our kitchen look as cute and adorable as possible with what we have. It's a small kitchen and, after working with a designer recently, I realize that it's a really FUNKY kitchen. I'll explain more in the future as you "journey" on this with us.

When we moved in, our kitchen looked like this. It had little personality. The cabinets were home made by someone and they are strange sizes, nothing standard, and it was remodeled around 1971, as you can see by the avocado green, tiled countertops. I worked with them - I decided the sage green could work and I painted all the cabinets white.

A few years later, we tore down the wall between our kitchen and our dining room. Until then, our kitchen was SUPER tiny. Taking that wall down years ago was a smart thing to do - messy, but smart! We honestly didn't need a separate dining room, as our outdoor patio is our dining room. We now use the dining room as our kitchen table eating area.

I added a buffet that I painted and used a carrara marble top on it to extend our counters, since we had so little counterspace. We also fixed up the other area with a newer stove and fridge and have a fairly new dishwasher now. We even got a new floor in the kitchen about three years ago that I really love!

But, the cabinets have had it. No amount of paint can keep them from falling apart. My extra drawer cabinet across the other side of the kitchen functions well, but is not so practical as I have to run back and forth to get stuff from there.

My ideal cabinets are no longer white. I have had painted white cabinets for 20 years now - at our first house and now at our current house.

This kitchen lets in a TON of light from the west facing windows. I am now dreaming of BLACK kitchen cabinets - yes, BLACK! MasterBrand has the perfect black cabinet that is totally my style - a shaker style and black - Montgomery is the style name from Diamond Cabinets {one of the lines by MasterBrand}!

  1. Go for it because my hubby won't let me. ha We have black appliances with oak cabinets and marbelized quartz countertops, which I love. The joke between hubby and me is should he die first, I get to have the cabinets painted! lol I look forward to being with you on this journey as it sounds awesome!!

  2. Ooooh YES! As long as your kitchen is so light and bright I think black cabinets would look great! I can't wait to see the transformation! My kitchen has handmade cupboards too but they are still in pretty good shape. I am planning on painting them white.

    1. I agree! It's so bright in there, but had it not been I would have looked for another color!

  3. You'll love it! I have black cabinets similar to the ones you've picked with white counters. I don't have any uppers, just open shelving as I have two peninsulas. The open shelving is on a wall with counter to ceiling white subway tile with black grout. I also have black appliances although I think stainless steel would look awesome too. I, too, have tons of natural light coming in there.
I love the look, one because I think it's pretty, but also because it's a bit different from what most people choose (and I think that's a good thing).

  5. i first saw black cabinets with carrara marble tops at a big party at Larry Hagman's house in the mountains above Ojai. he and his wife, Maj, opened their home for charitable events and i donated to attend. after seeing their beautiful (and huge) kitchen, i was determined to have black cabinets. it took me about 25 years but i got mine and i love them.

  6. We currently have black appliances and oak cabinets and I added rugs with black and other dark colors. I love the look of it, but my goodness-- the black cabinets are amazing! I can't wait to see the results!
