Painting brass

Have you ever been in a thrift store or at a garage sale and saw something cute, but it was brass?  Yuck, right?  It's super easy to change it...here' s a quick tutorial on how easy it is to change it.  Don't be afraid!

So, I found these cute brass, candlesticks at a thrift store.

I only paid $4 for the pair!
Just took a large box (from Costco), steel wool, some wipes, and metallic spray paint (you choose whatever color you like)
Wipe down with the steel wool (not too hard). Mostly just roughing up the surface.
I've read to use "cheese cloth" to wipe it down but I use a Clorox wipe cause it's just what I have around the house.  Mostly just get all the steel wool off.
Pick your spray paint.  I chose a metallic silver.
Spray several coats of paint - VERY lightly.
And then, you're done!

Here is another brass project I did years ago.
Here is our dining room about a month after we moved into our house in 2006.  Notice the very brassy chandelier!  (Umm, yuck) But the shape of it was really cute.  I added the little lamp shades that I got on clearance. That helped a little!

Here you can see what it looks like spray painted black.  It's super purdy! So, if you see brass, look past it!  You can change it.  Look at the shape and design of something.  Spray paint can be your best friend too!

  1. It's funny that you posted this today because I was just thinking of a project I want to do with my daughter's Aunt. She has some aqua, silver, white retro plates that she uses for Christmas. I'm going to make some kind of candle stick to match for her. I was offerered then in 1988 but I didn't like it. lol It's really retro and cool but I'm glad my SIL has it now since it belonged to her mom.

I'll share a picture when I get it done. :)
